BAUANG, La Union (PIA) — The Municipality of Bauang successfully held its 3rd River Rafting Competition at the Balili River on Dec. 21, 2024, reinforcing its standing as an emerging eco-tourism and outdoor adventure hub in the region.
The competition, a highlight of the town’s 10th Baggak (Morning Star) Festival, showcased not only river sports but also the community’s dedication to environmental conservation and sustainable tourism.
The Baggak Festival in the town has been celebrated since 1998 to honor the town’s historic founding and highlight its rich cultural heritage and community spirit.
The festival offers a chance to enjoy traditional dances and savor regional specialties like pinakbet and inasin, providing a deeper connection to the local culture.
Bauang Mayor Eulogio Clarence Martin de Guzman III underscored the importance of the Bauang River as both a natural resource and a symbol of community unity.
“The Bauang River is not just a source of life for our people, but also a testament to the strength and solidarity of our community. It connects us all, reminding us that together, we can overcome any challenge and build a future rooted in harmony and shared purpose,” De Guzman said.
The event attracted 24 teams from various barangays, alongside adventure enthusiasts and spectators. Participants navigated challenging currents, showcasing their skills, teamwork, and resilience throughout the race.
Each team comprised five members: two racers, one substitute, and two assistants. Participants used bamboo rafts and paddles (1–1.5 meters) with no sharp edges and adhered to strict safety protocols. Teams arriving late were disqualified, and outside assistance was prohibited unless for safety reasons.
At the finish line, teams had to grab and raise their color flag.
The winners of the competition received cash prizes, plaques, and certificates.
Team Barangay Payocpoc Norte Oeste emerged as the overall champion, while Team Barangay Pugo secured the 1st runner-up title, and Team Barangay Bucayab earned the 2nd runner-up position.
Consolation prizes were awarded to non-winning teams to recognize their participation and sportsmanship.
Meanwhile, Darwin Nodo, one of the participants, said the race truly helped him develop his skills in boat racing.
“It challenged me to push my limits, improve my techniques, and work better with my team. Every wave and turn taught me valuable lessons that I can carry forward in future competitions,” Nodo said.
De Guzman also emphasized the broader impact of the competition.
“This is more than just a sporting event. It’s a way to foster camaraderie, build community pride, and strengthen our commitment to protecting the Bauang River. By blending adventure with conservation, we’re positioning Bauang as a premier destination for sustainable tourism,” De Guzman said.
The 3rd River Rafting Competition in Bauang marks a significant milestone in the town’s efforts to promote environmental stewardship and adventure tourism, while also benefiting the local economy.
The event attracts both local and international visitors, boosting the tourism sector by increasing demand for accommodations, food, and transportation.
It also provides job opportunities for entrepreneurs, tour guides, among others contributing to the livelihoods of local communities.
Additionally, the competition encourages the preservation of the river’s natural beauty, fostering greater environmental awareness and supporting sustainable tourism practices in the region.
Plans for next year’s competition include expanded categories and a larger focus on community-driven conservation projects.
With its success, Bauang town continues to set the bar for eco-friendly activities in La Union and beyond. (CCMT/KJCR, PIA La Union)
