Bauang honors Rizal with commitment to education, community development

BAUANG, La Union (PIA) – The local government unit (LGU) of Bauang, La Union, commemorated the 128th Rizal Day on Dec. 30 to reaffirm its commitment to civic education, cultural preservation, and sustainable development.

By commemorating the life and legacy of Dr. José Rizal, the municipality underscored the importance of historical awareness in shaping its path toward progress.

The event, attended by municipal officials, line agencies, and community members, showcased the continued relevance of Rizal’s ideals in fostering unity and driving community development.

It featured a wreath-laying ceremony, speeches highlighting Rizal’s life and contributions, and a cultural program that showcased performances inspired by his works and ideals.

In his message, Mayor Eulogio Clarence Martin De Guzman III called on the community to uphold Rizal’s ideals.

“Rizal’s inspiration serves as our guide in strengthening our nation. Through unity and hard work, we can fulfill his dream of prosperity and peace for every Filipino,” De Guzman said.

The commemoration featured initiatives that emphasized Rizal’s advocacy for education as a tool for empowerment.

Educational activities were designed to deepen public understanding of Rizal’s works, including Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo, highlighting their significance in combating injustice and inspiring patriotism.

Workshops and discussions were conducted to engage the youth, fostering critical thinking and encouraging them to apply Rizal’s values of integrity and service to address modern challenges.

These efforts aim to equip the next generation with the knowledge and civic responsibility to contribute meaningfully to the community.

Vice Mayor Henry Bacurnay emphasized the importance of aligning local development projects with Rizal’s vision of unity and progress.

“Rizal’s legacy reminds us that each of us has a role to play in nation-building. By fostering unity and supporting local programs, we can honor his sacrifices and contribute to a brighter future for our community,” Bacurnay said.

Programs in education, cultural preservation, and economic development were highlighted as key drivers of Bauang’s growth.

Samantha Ronquillo, a local resident, expressed her appreciation for the event’s focus on community involvement.

“Remembering Rizal serves as a reminder that even ordinary citizens can contribute to our nation. Through simple acts like helping one another and teaching proper values to the youth, we can carry on his spirit,” Ronquillo shared.

The Rizal Day celebration reinforced the town’s commitment to forging partnerships with government agencies, civic organizations, and local leaders to address critical issues such as education, infrastructure, and social services.
