Be modern heroes amidst adversities, Rizal kin tells public

Descendants of national hero Dr. Jose Rizal renew their message of loving and serving the country, even amidst personal and societal adversities and hardships.

Calamba mayor and hero’s descendant, Roseller Rizal, said that the heroism shown by the country’s forefathers, whether big or small, should be reflected in every Filipino’s actions as a way to preserve our nation’s rights, identity, and sovereignty.

“Today, more than ever, we need to show heroism in our lives, our families, our communities, our society, and our country. The challenges our country currently faces are not easy, nor simple. But in our own way, we can help find the appropriate solutions, safeguard our freedom, and promote our development.”

Rizal added that modern heroes of Calamba continue to show their compassion for countrymen and have contributed greatly to the advancement of the city. During the 163rd birth anniversary of Dr. Jose Rizal on June 19, the city government of Calamba awarded civil society organizations Pugad Lawin ng Calamba and Calamba Parish Development Cooperative for their assistance extended to the city and its people.

“Heroism can be demonstrated at all times and in all seasons. We are greatly pleased that, in addition to showing these acts of heroism, our Calambagong Bayani awardees this year have proven that there is strength in unity and solidarity, much like the legacy Rizal left in Dapitan, a perfect example of what can be achieved through collective effort,” the mayor said.

Coming from the youth sector, Anton Azurin, a sixth-generation Rizal from the Paciano Rizal branch of the family, places high regard on the sacrifices of the heroes to finally attain independence and progress.

“As part of the youth of our nation, let us not forget the sacrifices of the heroes of our past. Their actions are the reason we are all here today, so let us not waste our opportunities. Like Rizal, let us continue the fight for a better future and welcome the dawn of a new day,” Azurin said.

Rizal proclaimed that the city government will continue to establish ways to pay tribute to the works and legacy of the national heroes as a way to preserve and celebrate the country’s culture and showcase its cultural heritage, including the celebration of the Buhayani Festival every year, cultural mapping programs, and through fora and symposiums.
