BFAR XI launches training center for red tilapia farming in Davao Oriental

GOVERNOR GENEROSO, Davao Oriental (PIA) – To revitalize the aquaculture production in Davao Oriental, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) XI has recently launched the P7.25-million Technology Demonstration Project on Red Tilapia Farming in Pond at the Tourism Site, Brgy. Don Aurelio Chicote, Governor Generoso, Davao Oriental.

Led by BFAR national director Elizer S. Salilig and BFAR-XI regional director Relly B. Garcia, alongside some local officials from the local government of Davao Oriental and Governor Generoso, the project will serve as a learning and training center for red tilapia farming.

Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony, Salilig emphasized the importance of the project in tapping the potential of fisheries development in the province while providing alternative and sustainable livelihood to the local fisherfolk.

“Aquaculture is a ‘must’ alternative livelihood. During typhoons and unfavorable weather, fisherfolk cannot fish. This project offers an alternative income and a source of fish for the community,” he said.

On the other hand, Governor Generoso Mayor Juanito C. Inojales highlighted the significant impact of the project on the residents of Governor Generoso in improving their economic conditions.

“We are grateful for BFAR’s support. This initiative symbolizes growth for our community, promoting progress and creating more opportunities. Gov Gen na mas progresibo, mas abante at mas maraming oportunidad (A more progressive, advanced and opportunity-rich Governor Generoso),” he said.

The project covers 6,735.5 square meters and includes a fishpond and a demonstration area designed for red tilapia culture technology.

The project particularly chose red tilapia due to its adaptability to brackish water environments and potential as a cost-effective alternative to high-value species.

Meanwhile, Garcia believed that the project would also serve as a model for other LGUs and fisherfolk associations to promote sustainable aquaculture practices to contribute to the long-term growth of the fisheries sector not only in the province and region but also in the entire country.
