SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union (PIA) – As the New Year approaches, the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) in La Union is intensifying efforts to promote a safe and fire-free celebration through its annual “Oplan Iwas Paputok” campaign.
The initiative aims to reduce fire-related incidents and injuries caused by firecrackers and fireworks by advocating for safe practices and community awareness.
Fire Senior Inspector Noel Lopez, BFP La Union’s spokesperson for the campaign, underscored the dangers of using illegal firecrackers, which can result in both personal injuries and fire outbreaks.
“Each year, we witness countless accidents that could have been avoided if only people followed the safety protocols. Fireworks, especially unregulated ones, pose a serious risk to public safety,” Lopez said.
He emphasized that the campaign serves as a call to action for the public to take responsibility for the safety of their families and communities.
Key initiatives for the campaign
The campaign, running from mid-December through early January, incorporates a multi-pronged approach:
- Information Drive: Posters, flyers, and social media content educate the public on firecracker safety and alternative celebratory methods, such as community fireworks displays conducted under controlled conditions.
- Market Inspections: In partnership with local authorities, the BFP conducts regular inspections of markets and retail outlets to ensure compliance with regulations. Unauthorized sellers are warned, fined, or face criminal charges.
- Strengthened Ordinances: Local government units (LGUs) enforce stricter bans on illegal firecrackers, including high-risk items like “kwitis” and “super lolo,” while promoting public fireworks displays as safer alternatives.
- Emergency Readiness: Fire stations across La Union are on high alert, with emergency response teams and fire trucks strategically stationed in high-risk areas. Coordination with hospitals and rescue teams ensures timely medical and rescue services.
- Community Engagement: Citizens are encouraged to report unsafe or unlawful firecracker activities through designated hotlines or local authorities.
“We need the community’s support. With their active participation, we can ensure that everyone enjoys a safe and peaceful celebration,” Lopez added.
This year’s campaign emphasizes the protection of children and other vulnerable groups, urging parents to supervise children and discourage them from handling fireworks.
To amplify its reach, the BFP has partnered with local media outlets to broadcast safety reminders and announcements. LGUs are also encouraged to spearhead public fireworks displays to discourage the use of individual firecrackers.
For emergencies or to report illegal firecracker activities, the public can contact the BFP La Union hotline: 0917 186-2711 message their Facebook Page: ‘BFP R1 La Union Provincial Office.’
“The key to achieving a safe New Year is cooperation from all sectors. By following the law and observing safety practices, we can all enjoy a happy, injury-free celebration,” Lopez concluded.
With a comprehensive plan involving public education, enforcement, and emergency response, the BFP is optimistic that La Union will experience a safe and joyous New Year celebration, free from the hazards of illegal firecrackers and fireworks. (AMB/CCMT/KJCR, PIA La Union)
