BAGUIO CITY (PIA) — The Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center (BGHMC) conducted a blood donation drive from February 25 to 28 at‌ the BGHMC Garden  as one of the activities in observance of  National Cancer Awareness Month.

Hematologist and Cancer Center head Kimberly Ubando said that cancer and patients with blood diseases require a lot of blood in their treatment. Illnesses like leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma fall under this category.

Patients undergoing surgeries  require a substantial amount of blood. Blood transfusion is also needed for patients undergoing chemotherapy, she said.

Because of the high demand for blood, the blood bank of BGHMC is often at a deficit of  supply, Nurse Jhenie Joy Robles said.

Blood gathered in blood donation drives is often  pre-allocated to patients that need them.

“Donating blood is very important for our patients and also sa mga nagdo-donate ng dugo,  para tulong na rin ninyo sa community,” Ubando said.

Nurse Maricar Posidio  invites  individuals who are qualified to donate blood to visit the Blood Donor Center of BGHMC which is  open every day and welcomes walk in donors.

“We invite you na magkaroon ng voluntary blood donation, open naman palagi ang BGHMC from 7AM to 10 PM,” Posidio said.

Blood donor Collin Rabira  encourages  her fellow youth  to donate blood to  help save lives.

“After ko mag-donate, na-feel ko na nakakatulong ako. Ang mapapayo ko sa iba, mag-donate kayo, ‘wag kayong matakot,” Rabira stated.

BGHMC strongly encourages everyone to donate blood as  every life matters. [JDP/DEG/Janine Laureta- PIA CAR-SLU Interns]
