BI obtains records of alleged Chinese spy

MANILA — The Bureau of Immigration (BI) said that it has obtained the details of the supposed Chinese spy that allegedly conducted espionage activities in Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) sites.

BI Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado said that upon verification with their records, they were able to extract the details of the suspect.

The unnamed Chinese man, 39-years-old, has travelled in and out of the Philippines since 2015 and is reportedly married to a Filipina.

Viado said that they have shared the information with the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to support the investigation against the subject.

The BI Chief said that they will be initiating deportation proceedings against him, to add to the other cases that will be filed against the man locally.

He clarified that they will not implement deportation until all local accountabilities and penalties have been resolved and served.

“We will ensure that we will identify any foreign cohorts that might be in the country assisting him,” said Viado. “These alleged spies have no place in the President’s Bagong Pilipinas. They will face serious punishment for their crimes,” he warned. (BI)
