Bicol airports operational for relief goods lift: DOTr chief

MANILA, (PIA)  — Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Jaime Bautista announced on Thursday, October 24, that airports in the Bicol region—specifically Daraga, Virac, Masbate, and Naga—are operational and available for the air transportation of relief goods.

This announcement comes as the region continues to cope with the impacts of Severe Tropical Storm Kristine.

Ang mga paliparan sa rehiyon ng Bicol—Daraga, Virac, Masbate, at Naga—ay gumagana at maaaring gamitin para sa transportasyon sa himpapawid ng mga relief goods,” Bautista said.

He emphasized the readiness of these airports to facilitate the delivery of essential supplies to affected areas.

Bautista also pointed out that personnel from the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) are on standby to assist with any flights that may be necessary at these airports.

This support is part of a broader effort to ensure that relief operations run smoothly in the wake of the storm.

The operational status of these airports is crucial, as many communities in Bicol have been significantly affected by flooding and landslides.

The availability of air transport will enable faster delivery of food, medical supplies, and other forms of assistance to those in need.

In addition to the airports, local government units and various agencies are coordinating efforts to assess the situation on the ground. This includes monitoring the conditions of roads and other infrastructure to facilitate land transport of relief goods wherever possible.

Bautista also expressed gratitude for the cooperation among different agencies involved in the relief efforts.

Mayroon kaming mga tauhan ng CAAP na magagamit upang tumulong kung magkakaroon ng mga paglipad sa mga Paliparan na ito,” he added.

This collaborative approach aims to maximize the efficiency of the Marcos administration’s response to the ongoing crisis.

The DOTr is also working to ensure that transportation services remain available for evacuees and those needing to access evacuation centers.

This includes coordination with local transport providers to ensure that safe and reliable options are available.

As the storm’s aftermath continues to unfold, the government remains focused on providing timely assistance to affected communities. The operational airports in Bicol are expected to play a vital role in these ongoing relief efforts.

Authorities urge residents to stay informed through official channels and cooperate with local government initiatives as they work to recover from the impact of the storm. (JCO/PIA-NCR)
