Bileco prioritizes construction of Higatangan submarine cable

NAVAL, Biliran (PIA) – Biliran Electric Cooperative, Inc. (Bileco) has announced that it will prioritize the construction of submarine cable to provide a stable and reliable 24/7 power supply to Higatangan Island,  one of the premier tourist destinations in Biliran province.

According to Allan Joseph S. Borrinaga, Bileco’s institutional services department manager, construction of the Higatangan submarine cable project is expected to begin this year or early 2025.

The project will be funded by a government subsidy from the National Electrification Administration (NEA) through its Barangay Line Enhancement Program (BLEP).

The Higatangan submarine cable project, based on Bileco’s proposal, will cost an estimated P127,599,318.

The project includes a four-kilometer, three-phase primary distribution line with 13.2 KV via a submarine cable installation from Barangay. Jubay, Calubian, Leyte, to Barangay Mabini, one of the island’s two barangays.

Biliran Rep. Gerardo J. Espina Jr., has filed House Bill No. 6197 to build a submarine electric distribution line connecting Higatangan Island, Naval, Biliran from Barangay. Jubay, Calubian, Leyte.

Espina recognized the urgency of providing Higatangan Island with a reliable and sustainable source of electricity to spur economic development. Based on Republic Act 10409, the area is part of the declared tourism development area in the province. (RSV, PIA Biliran)
