BIR 13 strengthens tax monitoring efforts

CEBU CITY, Cebu (PIA) — The Bureau of Internal Revenue Region No. 13 (BIR 13) is calling on establishments and professionals engaged in businesses and other income-earning activities to register with BIR and pay their respective tax obligations.

“We are appealing to all our establishments to please register your businesses with BIR bago pa magkaroon ng future problems,” said BIR 13 regional director Douglas A. Rufino during the 20th episode of the ‘Kapihan sa Bagong Pilipinas’ in Central Visayas on Oct. 8.

BIR conducts regular tax compliance verification drive to check if establishments operating within their area of jurisdiction are BIR-registered and regularly paying their taxes.

According to the regional director, penalties and consequences await those who continue to evade paying their taxes and are non-compliant of the regulatory business requirements.

“If we find out that you are an unregistered entity, our legal division will be filing an unlawful pursuit of a business case against you,” Rufino added.

To promote ease of taxpayers’ registration, BIR has strengthened their digital web platform where establishments, individuals, and other entities can process their BIR registration and update their registration information.

Those who want to process their BIR registration can visit the Online Registration and Update System (ORUS) thru https://orus.bir.gov.ph/home.

Meanwhile, in enhancing their campaign on tax monitoring and compliance, the BIR said they have visited establishments, specifically those that engage in Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) and offices rendering virtual assistance services, to ensure that they are compliant with tax laws and regulations.

The bureau is also monitoring the digital space to check if online sellers, social media influencers, and other individuals who earn online are BIR-registered and compliant with the laws and regulations.

“We have already upgraded our tax monitoring when it comes to these businesses, we have our BIR personnel who enforce our check and monitoring activities to ensure that no one is evading their tax obligation to the government,” Rufino said.

BIR was the featured agency during the 20th episode of the ‘Kapihan sa Bagong Pilipinas’ program, a platform initiated by the Presidential Communication Office (PCO) through the Philippine Information Agency (PIA).
