Book on copyright for freelancers named finalist in National Book Awards

MANILA (PIA)—A book for freelance writers has been selected as a finalist for the Best Book on Professions for the 2024 National Book Awards.

“The Written Property: A Freelance Writer’s Guide to Copyright,”  published by the Freelance Writers’ Guild of the Philippines (FWGP) and supported by the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL), was launched in 2023.

FWGP founder Imelda Morales and private practitioner Mark Robert Dy edited the book that addresses critical questions about copyright law, which many freelancers and publishers face.

The book covers essential topics such as the basics of copyright, the nature of protected and derivative works, and the steps writers can take against copyright infringement.

Its publication is part of IPOPHL’s Copyright Plus Program which aims to increase awareness of underserved communities on intellectual property rights.

A survey showing that 85 percent of respondents were either unfamiliar with the term “intellectual property” or uncertain about its meaning prompted the publication initiative.

IPOPHL Director General Rowel S. Barba praised the book’s nomination, noting its relevance in the Philippines’ rapidly expanding gig economy, in which temporary positions are common and organizations hire independent workers for short-term commitments.

According to Payoneer’s 2019 Global Gig Economy Index, the country ranks sixth globally in freelance market growth with a 35 percent increase in freelance earnings.

“The growing gig economy makes it essential for freelancers to understand their ownership rights and the intricacies of licensing contracts,” Barba said.

“With ‘The Written Property’ freelancers can protect their copyrights more effectively, allowing them to concentrate on their creative work rather than worrying about infringement,” he added.

Emerson G. Cuyo, Director of the Bureau of Copyrights and Related Rights, encouraged freelance writers to read the book, highlighting its accessible and concise format created by FWGP’s own writers. He referred to it as a vital resource for understanding copyright issues in freelancing.

“I believe this book will serve as a go-to reference for freelance writers and authors, providing them with the knowledge to navigate their rights and responsibilities confidently,” Cuyo added.
