BSK poll bets, Comelec stage unity walk, peace covenant in Catanduanes

VIRAC, Catanduanes (PIA) – In connection with the conduct of 2023 Barangay and Sannguniang Bayan Elections (BSKE) this October 20, 2023, the Commission on Elections spearheaded the conduct of unity walk, interfaith prayer rally, peace covenant signing and candidates’ forum last September 23 in various towns of this island province.

This activity was part of the initiative of the Police Regional Office 5 (PRO5), Catanduanes Provncial Police Office and Comelec in support to the Secure, Accurate, Free and Fair Elections (SAFE) project, which aims to encourage, inspire, and motivate every individual to participate in the campaign.

In Virac, the event was attended by a total of 541 representatives from PNP Virac, AFP, DILG, Liga ng mga Barangay and candidates for 2023 BSKE.

On the other hand, Police Capt. Jerome C. Despuig of Bagamanoc town, Bagamanoc Election Officer Editha Capistrano II, representatives of various religious organizations, and BSKE candidates joined the unity walk in the town of Bagamanoc.

In his message, Despuig reminded the candidates that vote buying and vote selling are strictly prohibited and considered election offenses which may lead to imprisonment of not less than one year but not exceeding six years.

He also emphasized that the gun ban as well as the conduct of Comelec checkpoint in various strategic areas was being strictly implemented by their agency

Aside from the unity walk and interfaith peace rally, a covenant signing was also held. In the town of Bato, PNP Bato led the activity which was conducted at Bato Covered Court, Brgy. Libod Poblacion, Bato, Catanduanes, commencing at 5:00 AM. The event was attended by all aspirants from Punong Barangay to Sangguniang Kabataan of Bato.

Meanwhile, in San Miguel town, a ceremonial releasing of white balloons symbolizing peace and unity was conducted as part of the activity. This was followed by the signing of integrity pledge by PNP, DILG, Comelec, religious sector representatives, and candidates. (PIA5/Catanduanes)
