MALAYBALAY CITY (PIA) – “To combat stem borers and black bugs in crops, farmers can use environment-friendly pest control methods. These techniques not only protect crops but also preserve soil fertility for future planting seasons,” said Lucille Minguez, Department of Agriculture-Regional Crop Protection Center (DA-RCPC) chief.
Citing Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) data, Minguez said 20 to 40 percent of the world’s harvest is lost annually to insect infestations. This urgent issue underscores the need for eco-friendly pest control solutions to safeguard farmers’ food production.
“To our farmers, remember that effective pest control is key to thriving crops. Strengthen them with proper nutrition and quality seeds. Implement integrated pest management using cultural, physical, and biological methods. It ensures healthier crops and cuts costs,” she emphasized.
Biological control agents
The DA-RCPC in Bangcud, Malaybalay City, produces and distributes Biological Control Agents (BCAs), offering farmers organic pest control options.
BCAs are natural pest controllers that target insects, diseases, and weeds without chemicals. They provide a sustainable, eco-friendly solution that reduces environmental impact while protecting crops.
BCAs are readily available in Bukidnon. Central Mindanao University supplies lacewings, Maramag provides Trichogramma japonicum, and Don Carlos offers Trichogramma, lacewings, and Eocanthecona.
Farmers in Malaybalay City can obtain Metarhizium, while Valencia City offers Trichogramma, equipping them with eco-friendly tools to protect crops.
“We recommend egg parasitoids and Trichogramma japonicum to control rice stem borers. Trichogramma attacks pest eggs, preventing infestations. Apply it two to three weeks after transplanting and choose resistant rice varieties for better protection,” Minguez explained.
Partnerships
The DA-RCPC also collaborates with provincial and municipal agriculture offices for field diagnostics, helping experts assess pest infestations and provide immediate solutions.
This partnership aids farmers in minimizing damage and accelerating recovery during calamities and pest outbreaks.
As DA’s crop protection hub, RCPC promotes research, innovation, and collaboration to ensure sustainable pest control. Its strategies enhance food security, sustainability, and economic growth. (MSM/PIA-10/Bukidnon)
