CAAP bares airport developments in Cagayan Valley

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan (PIA) – – The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) recently bared new improvements in the airports in Cagayan, Batanes, and Isabela provinces for safer travels. 

General Manager Mary Sulyn Sagorsor of CAAP Area Center 2 said the enhancements play a vital role in economic development, connectivity, and accessibility not only for trade and commerce but also for tourism and emergency services. 

The development projects, she said, include a completed covered pathwalk at the Tuguegarao Airport worth P1.3 million, the calibration of an aircraft parking bay, strip width correction, strip ends, ditch canal, box culvert, and the establishment of performance-based navigation procedure.

She also said major infrastructure projects are ongoing at the airport including the construction of a control tower building, security fence and gate, and provision of a manhole and transformers pad with a project cost of P57.93 million. 


“There is also an ongoing rehabilitation of the existing passenger terminal building with P110.69 million project cost to include the construction of administration building and construction of pump house with transformer pad,” Sagorsor said. 


The Tuguegarao Airport is the gateway for Cagayanos who prefer a 45-minute flying time from Manila. It also serves as a hub for Tuguegarao-Batanes, Calayan, Maconacon, Palanan, and vice versa. 


In Isabela, Sagorsor also said that installing an airfield lighting system is ongoing at the Cauayan Airport, which has a P76.318 million project fund.



Establishing a covered pathwalk, apron expansion, and security fence construction are also ongoing at the Cauayan Airport.

In Batanes, she also said the extension of the runway, including strip grade correction and slope protection using coconut bio-engineering at Basco Airport, has been completed, while the widening of the stopway and the asphalt overlay of the runway are ongoing. 


“There’s  also other small projects that we are undertaking at Basco Airport including the repair of some of the facilities of the airport and the construction of gender-neutral comfort room,” Sagorsor added. 


She also said the Ibatayat Airport in Batanes is undertaking apron expansion, runway extension, and fence construction.
