Cagayan kicks off 441st anniversary with month-long celebration

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan (PIA) – – The month-long celebration of the Aggao nac Cagayan officially kicked off on June 1, starting with the second Governor Manuel Mamba Cup 2024 basketball tournament.

Cagayan Gov. Manuel Mamba presented the 34 basketball teams during the opening ceremony held at the Cagayan Sports Coliseum.

Competing teams are representatives of municipal local government units, various offices at the provincial government unit, national government agencies, and cooperatives in the province.

In his message, Mamba said that sports activities such as basketball help promote good health.

“Kahit hirap sa pera basta mayaman sa kalusugan, yan ang gusto nating ipakita rito at lagi kong ipinagdadasal ay ang magandang kalusugan ng lahat,” said the governor.

(Even though we are not rich financially, as long as we are healthy, that’s the most important thing. I always pray for everyone’s good health.)

In 2023, the team from the Cagayan Police Provincial Office emerged as champions in the 1st Governor Manuel Mamba Cup (CPPO), while the team from the Solana LGU came in second.

The CPPO and Solana LGU received a prize of one million and a half million worth of projects, respectively.

On the other hand, the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office revealed on June 1 the Top 3 winners for the three categories of the 2nd Cagayan Resiliency Award – an award that aims to recognize local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Offices in the province as well as the private sectors that champion disaster readiness and preparedness to alleviate the impact of the calamity in the province.

Under the ‘Best Practice on Disaster Management for Natural Hazard’, the finalists are the MDRRMO Lal-lo, MDRRMO Solana and MDRRMO Sta. Praxedes.

Under the ‘Best Practice on Disaster Management For Human-Induced Hazards’, the finalists are City DRRMO Tuguegarao, MDRRMO Lal-lo and MDRRMO GONZAGA.

Under the ‘Best Practice on Disaster Management for CSOs/ NGOs/NGAs/ Private Sectors on Preparedness and Response’, the finalists are the Kaakibat Civicom Communications International Incorporated-Ballesteros Chapter, Psychological Association of Cagayan, and the Philippine Coast Guard Auxiliary (PCDA) North-Eastern Luzon – 1203rd squadron.

The annual staging of Pride Month celebration was also conducted at SM City Tuguegarao on June 5 as part of the Aggao nac Cagayan with the theme “Stand Proud, Love Loud!”  where members of the LGBTQIA+ and allies paraded together with members of Tuguegarao United for Gender and Universal Equality (TUGUE), JCI Tuguegarao Ybanag (JCI TY) Rainbow Pride of Tuguegarao, Magic Brothers and students from the University of Saint Louis Tuguegarao (USLT) and Cagayan State University (CSU).

With the theme “Pagguruffunan, Endless Cagayan,” this year’s celebration of Aggao nac Cagayan highlights the province’s gains in tourism and other economic drivers.

Other activities include the Pabbarayle (street dancing competition), sanc sculpturing nd beach party, pilgrimage bike, Cagayan Singing Idol, Song Writing contest, among others.
