Cagayan Valley raises alert status for Lenten, summer vacation

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan (PIA) – The Cagayan Valley Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (CVDRRMC) has raised its alert levels in preparation for the Lenten season and summer vacation.

A red alert has been declared for the observance of Holy Week, while a blue alert has been issued for the summer break, particularly due to the rising heat index in the region.

Romeo Ganal of DOST-PAGASA said that the heat index in some parts of the region is forecast to reach the “danger” category, with temperatures rising up to 44 degrees Celsius.

In response, Civil Defense Regional Director Leon DG. Rafael advised the public to take precautionary measures when participating in Lenten and outdoor activities.

He also urged council members to intensify the dissemination of information regarding the extreme weather conditions and associated health risks.

“The public is advised to stay hydrated and limit outdoor physical activities to avoid fatigue, cramps, and heat exhaustion. Let us all be vigilant and take necessary precautions,” Rafael said.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) has heightened checkpoint operations, established motorist assistance centers, conducted mobile patrols in high-traffic areas, and deployed tourist police units to ensure public safety.

Meanwhile, the Philippine Coast Guard is conducting coastal security patrols and seaborne operations in tourist-heavy areas.

LTJG Eulogio Quinto III said they will also intensify inspections of inbound and outbound vessels and aircraft to ensure compliance with safety protocols.

The Bureau of Fire Protection introduced the “Beep Me App,” a one-tap emergency call application that connects users to emergency services and provides real-time GPS coordinates.

SFO2 Rosemelyn Laguitao added that the bureau continues to conduct public awareness campaigns on fire prevention and safety tips. (OTB/PIA Region 2)
