DAET, Camarines Norte (PIA) – High school students in Camarines Norte have praised the provincial government for organizing “LibVOCACY” in observance of Library and Information Services Month.
The event highlighted the vital role that libraries play in promoting equitable access to information and resources for everyone.
The activities included in LibVOCACY featured a trivia quiz competition, a spelling bee, a seminar on radio broadcasting, a seminar-workshop on Kundiman, and a Kundiman singing contest.
“Ang kahalagahan ng Spelling Bee sa akin ay ito ay nakakapagpatalas ng aking isipan at nakakadagdag ng kaalaman,” said Sofia Eds V. Abad of Vinzons Pilot High School. She bagged first place in the Spelling Bee Competition.
(The importance of the Spelling Bee to me is that it sharpened my mind and added in my knowledge)
She said that the experience in the contest will help her research, especially the spelling and grammar that can be used in the construction of sentences.
Angel Garrido, Grade 11 of Tulay na Lupa National High School in Labo town who joined the workshop on broadcasting is interested in the effective way of speaking and how to catch the attention of the audience.
“I am glad that the broadcasting workshop will test our ability in the field even though this is just a crash course,” she said.
Jonnaby Briones, Grade 11 of Froilan D. Lopez High School wanted to take mass communication and his dream job is to become a newscaster.
He said that there is lots of fake news and broadcasting is one way to express the good news.
“Nagpapasalamat ako at nagbigay ng opportunity ang provincial government upang mahasa ang future broadcasters ng Camarines Norte (I am thankful that the provincial government gave an opportunity to train the future broadcasters in Camarines Norte),” he said.
Maria Lucia Fatima, grade 9 of Moreno Integrated HS bagged first place in Kundiman Singing Contest.
She said that the Kundiman is a kind of music that can calm those who listen to music.
The contest on Kundiman in the library month is to revive the essence of the music in our country, she said.
“Ang Kundiman ay magandang aktibidad para sa ating bansa, malaking tulong ito sa mag-aaral na katulad ko, dahil naipapakita natin ang ating damdamin, pagmamahal sa ating minamahal sa buhay,” Renzo Rex Maturan of San Roque National High School said. Maturan, 17, garnered fourth place in the Kundiman contest.
(Kundiman is a good activity for our country, this is a big help to students like me, to show our feelings and love to our loved ones.)
He said Kundiman contests commemorate the traditional way of living of our ancestors and the indigenous people, and show the beauty of songs.
Museum Curator and OIC Library Information Services Abel Icatlo said that public libraries are one of the mandates of the local government units that aim to build a better person for a better society.
“We are providing food for our soul, brain, and heart and trying to mold a better person”, he said.
He said that in the library it can foster imagination, resiliency, and creativity.
Studying is important, but as we grow in knowledge, we should also grow in virtues’, he said.
The LibVOCACY was held on Nov. 18-22 wherein on the last day, the provincial government awarded trophies, medals, cash, and certificates to winners and participants of the weeklong activity.
The theme was “LibVOCACY -Unity Towards Inclusive and Empowered Libraries” reflecting a commitment to advocacy, inclusivity, and empowerment within the library community. (PIA5/Camarines Norte)
