MERCEDES, Camarines Norte (PIA) – The local government of this coastal town is set to provide relief assistance to the town’s fisherfolk who are reeling from the impact of the shear line and northeast monsoon.
In a resolution signed recently, members of the sangguniang bayan of Mercedes declared a state of calamity in the town to facilitate access to calamity funds and enable the municipal government to provide timely support to the fisherfolks.
Mercedes Mayor Alexander Pajarillo said the town has been hit hard by the inclement weather conditions brought about by northeast monsoon and shear line in the past few weeks.
The shear line and northeast monsoon, locally termed as amihan, spawned giant waves, making the sea dangerous to fishers.
As a result, the town’s primary source of income, which is fishing, has been greatly affected, Pajarillo said.
Village chieftains said fishermen were unable to go on fishing, which had a direct impact on their day-to-day living.

The Municipal Agriculture Office has submitted data and reports on fisherfolk and business sector affected by the shearline and amihan, which were “considerably numerous” to justify the declaration of calamity. The declaration of State of Calamity will last for three months unless earlier lifted.
On the other hand, the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office has recommended resource augmentation and a series of interventions to help other sectors and families needing immediate assistance. (PIA 5/Camarines Norte)
