CAMIGUIN (PIA) — To enhance Camiguin’s disaster preparedness, the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), in partnership with the Camiguin provincial government and the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office, held Antenna Design and Radio Communications Training from Feb. 17 to 20 at the Mambajao Convention Center.
“This strategic initiative aims to strengthen Camiguin’s disaster resilience and preparedness by empowering local responders with the knowledge and skills to utilize the Regional Disaster Network,” said James Sagocsoc, DICT Camiguin provincial director.
The training covered National Telecommunications Commission regulations, licensing and compliance. DICT specialists taught radio communication basics, antenna types and applications, ending with a hands-on antenna workshop.
Participants said they gained valuable insights and practical knowledge with guidance from resource speakers from DICT and NTC.
“Katong naka-experience mi og bagyo dinhi sa Camiguin, lisod kaayo i-communicate kay nawala gyud ang signal. Daghan mga taga-Camiguin nga wala diri ang nabalaka kung naunsa na ilang pamilya kay lage dili matawagan. Maong dako kaayo ni og tabang ang training para malikayan na tong panghitabo sauna,” said Raquel Ranara, Mambajao Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Officer.
(When we experienced a typhoon here in Camiguin, it was very difficult to communicate because the signal was completely lost. Many Camiguin residents who were away were worried about their families because they couldn’t contact them. That’s why this training is a huge help in preventing that situation from happening again.)
“This groundbreaking initiative marks a significant investment in Region 10’s disaster resilience, ensuring that emergency response teams are equipped with the technical expertise and practical skills necessary for robust emergency communications during critical situations,” Sagocsoc said.
Enhancing emergency communications capabilities throughout the province, the training, the first of its kind in Northern Mindanao, will soon be implemented in other provinces after the launch in Camiguin. (JDPA, Philippine Information Agency-10/Camiguin)
