Capiz unveils ‘Siege of Panay’ historical marker

ROXAS CITY, Capiz (PIA) — A historical marker for the “Siege of Panay” was recently unveiled by the Capiz Provincial Tourism and Cultural Affairs Office in coordination with the local government unit of Panay town.

The marker was erected en route the bridge along Calle Revolucion in Panay, regarded as the second oldest street in the Philippines.

The four-hour battle dubbed “Siege of Panay” is considered the bloodiest battle in the Visayas during the 1898 Philippine Revolution with 172 local revolutionaries killed, defending Panay from an estimated 1,000 Spanish colonial forces.

It is the fourth historical marker established in view of the Project Mohon or installation of markers of the Capiz provincial government.

The first three markers were for Capiznon freedom fighter and Brigadier General Juan Arce in Sigma town, Balisong Hill in Pilar town that is a historic site of the battle between the Spaniards and the Capiznon revolutionaries led by Gen. Arce in what is now known as “Battle of Balisong” in Brgy. San Esteban, Pilar and the Gabaldon Building of Capiz National High School in Roxas City.

The installation of markers aims to increase the recognition for local heritage sites, historic events and significant personalities in the province pursuant to the Republic Act 10066  or the Heritage Act of 2009 and Republic Act 10066  or Strengthening Peoples’ Nationalism through Philippine History Act.

The project also further aims to integrate the significance of local history and heritage in the lives of the Capisnon people.

Project Mohon was born as a collaboration project with Capisnon historian Dr. Vicente C. Villan whose rigorous and long-established research in Capiz history served as the project’s guiding principles.

The project further progressed through the help of the Capiz Provincial Engineer’s Office, United Architects of the Philippines (UAP) – Capiz Chapter and the Capiz Provincial Culture and Arts Council. (AGP/ AAL/PIA Capiz with reports from PTCAO)
