‘Carina’ leaves P11.7-M damage in Ilocos Sur

VIGAN CITY, Ilocos Sur (PIA)—Super Typhoon Carina battered the province, leaving a trail of destruction pegged at P11.7 million, according to the provincial disaster response office.

Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) records as of July 25 showed that infrastructure facilities were hardest hit by Carina’s onslaught that also enhanced the southwest monsoon, dumping heavy rains.

Carina, which intensified into a super typhoon before leaving the country, caused P11,716,531.69 in damage to infrastructure, primarily affecting roads, stone masonry, flood control structures, a resettlement project, and a covered court in the towns of Banayoyo, Santa, San Emilio, and Narvacan.

Aside from its infrastructure toll, Carina left P80,694 in damage to agriculture, particularly rice, corn, and high-value crops in San Emilio, Santa, Banayoyo, and Salcedo.

Also, the cyclone destroyed farm equipment, including water pumps and hoses, in San Emilio.

Furthermore, the PDRRMO reported that livestock losses amounted to P7,500, particularly affecting goats in Banayoyo.

In addition, two houses in Suyo town were partially damaged.

In response, the PDRRMO provided assistance to nine barangays in Vigan City and evacuated one family in Mabileg, Sigay.

Emergency alert centers were activated on July 22, and warnings were cascaded to local DRRMs.

PDRRM’s Rhon Arquelada urged residents to remain vigilant, especially those living near rivers and low-lying areas.

Arquelada said, “Let us keep monitoring our official pages for updates on the weather. Let us remain vigilant, particularly for those residents near rivers. Evacuate as early as you can, and immediately if there are advisories from the local DRRMs. Let us all stay safe.”
