MANILA — The Climate Change Commission (CCC) joins global stakeholders in celebrating World Maritime Day and reinforcing efforts to decarbonize the global maritime industry.
The maritime sector contributes almost 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions. With nearly 400,000 Filipino seafarers—over a quarter of the world’s maritime workforce—our nation plays a pivotal role in promoting sustainable shipping.
Since 2009, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) has advanced Environmentally Sustainable Transport, becoming the first agency to establish a GHG Inventory Team under the Philippine Greenhouse Gas Inventory Management and Reporting System (Executive Order No. 174).
Policies like the Vessel Fleet Modernization Program and the Establishment of Data Collection System for the Maritime Sector are among the measures being implemented to ensure a low-carbon future for our shipping industry.
The Maritime Industry Authority’s National Strategic Action Plan (NSAP), part of the 10-Year Maritime Industry Development Plan, serves as the roadmap for the implementation of environment-oriented laws and standards for the maritime industry.
The CCC supports a just transition for the maritime industry in collaboration with DOTr and international partners, including the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
“Let’s work together to build a low-carbon maritime industry—where our seas are protected, our shipping practices are sustainable, and our economy thrives,” said CCC Vice Chairperson and Executive Director Robert E.A. Borje.
World Maritime Day is commemorated every last Thursday of September to strengthen efforts to decarbonize the global maritime industry.
