CAGAYAN DE ORO (PIA) — To promote unity, health, and wellness and highlight commitment to educational excellence, the Commission on Higher Education (CHED)-10 organized the “Solidarity Walk for Excellence in Higher Education” at the Rio de Oro Boulevard, Cagayan de Oro City, on October 29, starting at the Puntod side to the J.R. Borja entry point with about a 2.3-kilometer stretch.

“We owe that to the universities and colleges that implement the programs. For the past  two years, the commission has gotten an unqualified opinion from the commission on audit that is the highest rating that can be given to a government agency,” said CHED Chairperson J. Prospero De Vera III.

The commission’s 3rd Quarter National Directorate Meeting, October 28-31, includes the walk, a yoga session, and a short program at the Kagay-an Amphitheatre in Plaza Divisoria.

While CHED highlights the importance of having a healthy body, De Vera highlights sound fiscal management for the commission. He notes that CHED has been among the top, most trusted, and best-performing national government agencies for the past three years.

The Commission on Audit (COA) issues an unmodified or unqualified opinion when the auditor concludes that the financial statements adhere to the applicable financial reporting framework in all material respects.

“We are fully compliant with all audit procedures; this means that you can trust us with public money,” said De Vera.

He stated that CHED has already utilized 98 percent of public funds, ensuring full and law-abiding use of all funds.

The implementation and utilization of funds in the Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education (UAQTE) is at 99.5 percent,  according to De Vera. Under Republic Act No. 10931, the UAQTE provides free tuition and other school fees in state universities and colleges (SUCs), local universities and colleges (LUCs), and state-run technical-vocational institutions.

“We are doing our best to make sure that our programs are implemented correctly. We are making sure that our students receive quality education for everyone,” the chairperson said, adding that all of CHED’s success stories are achieved with the help of both public and private universities and colleges.

“The solidarity walk manifests CHED’s strong support for SUCs and LUCs. Tuition is free for our students,” said Dr. Dolorita C. Nacua-Arao, OIC president of the Opol Community College.

She said this demonstrates strong support for the government’s goal of strengthening higher education and noted that teaching is a highly stressful profession, and teachers need to be healthy to perform their tasks effectively.

For his part, Roger E. Odron, director of the Office of Cultural Affairs of Liceo de Cagayan University, said health and wellness directly impact both personal and professional well-being. These create balance in daily work life, reinforce his passion for sharing knowledge, and enhance my productivity as an educator.

“By prioritizing wellness, I can maintain the energy and focus needed to engage effectively with students, manage responsibilities, and contribute meaningfully to my profession,” said Odron.

He also lauded CHED’s solidarity walk, as it serves as a powerful symbol of unity and collaboration among participants and institutions, fostering positivity and camaraderie.

“It unites individuals with shared goals, building a collective spirit that highlights the importance of working together toward common causes and educational advancement,” he said. (SAYU/PIA-10)
