DAGUPAN CITY (PIA) — The Panpacific University has reached another milestone by being granted “autonomous status” by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) on November 24, a recognition of excellence and standing in higher education institutions (HEI).
The CHED grants this status to a university if it consistently demonstrates quality education, meets specific benchmarks, and has a strong track record.
“It is not just a recognition but a responsibility for the university to maintain high standards, promote sustainability, and continue being a source of hope and opportunity,” Dr. Donna Taguiba, president of Panpacific University, said during the celebration on November 26 at the Panpacific University Events Center in Urdaneta City, Pangasinan.
Taguiba acknowledged the collective efforts of the academic community, highlighting the vital role of education in shaping the future and advancing community development.
Through this recognition, the university is empowered to implement programs that address societal challenges, prepare students for global competitiveness, and contribute to sustainable development.
CHED Region 1 Director Christine Ferrer said that autonomous status signifies a university’s quality programs, on par with major institutions in the National Capital Region (NCR), that produce employable graduates.
“We are guided by Commission Memorandum Order (CMO) No. 6, s. 2023, which outlines the qualifications for autonomous status, including the number of accredited programs, the university’s integrity and reputation, and the requirement that all permanent faculty members hold master’s degrees and engage in research and extension programs,” Ferrer said, affirming that Panpacific University meets these qualifications.
“In Region 1, two universities and colleges have attained autonomous status: Panpacific University and Saint Louis College of San Fernando City in La Union,” Ferrer added, highlighting that Panpacific University is the most active and forward-thinking institution in the Ilocos region.
Meanwhile, the achievement is expected to enhance the university’s reputation, attract more students, and create partnerships with international academic institutions.
Building on this milestone, Panpacific University aims to expand its reach through an online distance learning program, similar to an Open University, to provide quality education to students unable to attend in person.
Additionally, the university will invest in infrastructure development to accommodate more enrollees and ensure the continued delivery of quality education, producing globally competitive graduates who are equipped to make meaningful contributions to society.
With this new status and reflecting its belief in the transformative power of education, Panpacific University assures that it will continue to empower students to make a positive impact on the world.
Likewise, a special marker was unveiled during the celebration, themed “Legacy of Leadership and Sustainability: Celebrating Autonomous Status and Universityhood,” symbolizing Panpacific University’s ongoing journey of excellence and innovation in higher education.
The event also marked the university’s 17th year of universityhood, adding to the significance of the milestone. (AMB/JCDR/PIA Pangasinan)
