CHED launches ₱21.4M learner's information, mgt. system project in RSU

ODIONGAN, Romblon (PIA) — The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) inaugurated the third phase of Romblon State University’s multi-million peso project, aimed at enhancing the university’s information and management system, on February 19.

The university’s Smart Isla Project, a ₱21.4-million initiative, will support the quality education and efficient learning delivery of the institution.

Funded under CHED’s Institutional Development and Innovation Grant, the project seeks to modernize RSU’s digital infrastructure, ensuring seamless access to educational resources for students and faculty, regardless of circumstances such as pandemics.

CHED Chairperson J. Prospero de Vera III, who attended the launching ceremony, highlighted the importance of investing in higher education institutions, particularly in island provinces like Romblon, to bridge gaps in access to quality learning.

“Our expectation is that they will use the funds and they will use them effectively to accelerate the improvement of their quality education,” De Vera told PIA Romblon in an interview.

RSU President, Dr. Merian Catajay-Mani, said that through this initiative, the university has acquired data servers, digital duplicators, computer desktops, microbiology equipment, and post-harvest equipment, which will enhance research, instruction, and administrative processes.

Mani added that this initiative is a step toward a future where quality education is more accessible. The Smart Isla Project aligns with RSU’s vision of becoming a Smart Campus, ensuring that students, faculty, and stakeholders benefit from a more efficient and technology-driven learning environment.

Meanwhile, Mani also announced during the ceremony that a ₱750 million fund has been allotted for Phase III of RSU’s Smart Campus Program under the General Appropriations Act. The funding is expected to further expand the university’s digital transformation, reinforcing its goal of becoming a leading smart campus in the region.

While in Romblon, De Vera also led the groundbreaking ceremony of a ₱20 million new state-of-the-art sports complex inside the main campus as part of the CHED-funded Community Outreach for Athletes and Character Enhancement Through Sports (Coaches) Program. It aims to upgrade RSU’s existing gymnasium and improve sports programs.
