CEBU CITY, Cebu (PIA) – The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) in Region 7 has called on the media to apply “no harm or minimized harm” in reporting and ensure that the content they publish will be ethical or in accordance with the law.
“Media practitioners who do not possess or don’t have any rules or standards on ethical practice are involved in irresponsible media practice because they follow their ethical standards,” said CHR-7 regional director Atty. Arvin A. Odron.
He emphasized that the media should follow the protocols for reporting human rights violations, especially on ethical standards and the use of online platforms.
“The media should be seeking the truth and reporting it based on the actual situations with no biases, and for the protection and promotion of human rights,” Ordron said.
He explained that the government may limit the enjoyment of human rights for the public good.
“The right to free information or opinion is not an absolute right of the human being; rather, it is subject to derogation,” said Odron.
The CHR-7 official was one of the speakers during the seminar on “The Media, Human Rights, and Vulnerable Sectors” on Dec. 6, in line with the 2024 Human Rights Consciousness Week. (ZCL/PIA7)
