CHR educates women on political rights

KORONADAL CITY, South Cotabato (PIA) — The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) in Region 12 is actively educating women about their political rights in preparation for the national and local elections.

Dubbed “Her Vote, Her Right: Women’s Rights to Political Participation,” the education campaign focused on the Magna Carta for Women (Republic Act 9710) and their right to political participation, emphasizing their roles not only as voters but also as influential decision-makers.

Lawyer Stephanie D. Publico, gender and development focal person for CHR Region 12, emphasized the significance of gender inclusivity, stressing that the active participation of women is essential for creating a more inclusive and progressive future for the country.

“We are called to continuously reflect and uphold the rights and dignity of women, ensuring that every woman’s voice is heard, and her rights are respected,” Publico said.

As the 2025 elections approach, CHR encourages women to exercise their right to vote and engage in shaping policies that will impact their communities.

Publico said that CHR in the region will continue to advocate for gender equality and the political empowerment of women at all costs.

Over 50 individuals, including representatives from the Social Action Center of the Diocese of Marbel, the Office of the Senior Citizens Association, and students from various universities, such as the Notre Dame of Marbel University, University of Southern Mindanao, Mindanao State University, and Green Valley College Foundation attended the event held in the city.

The gathering featured an interactive workshop in which participants shared their experiences, challenges, and suggestions aimed at enhancing women’s roles in governance.

The agency emphasized that promoting women’s rights in governance fosters a more equitable society where every voice is valued, particularly now that the elections are in the offing. (AMB, PIA Region 12)
