CHSO monitors barangays with highest dengue cases in Baguio for targeted IEC

BAGUIO CITY (PIA) — The Baguio City Health Services Office, City Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit (CHSO-CESU) with the Department of Health (DOH) continue to monitor dengue cases in the city focusing on ten barangays with the highest number of reported cases.

The top ten barangays include Irisan, Bakakeng Central, Pinsao Proper, Loakan Proper, Bakakeng North, Camp 7, Dominican Hill Mirador, Pinsao Pilot Proper, San Vicente, Pacdal, Kias, Asin Road, Santo Tomas Proper, and Fairview Village.

By focusing on the barangays with the highest number of dengue cases, CHSO aims to make information dissemination more targeted and effective, ensuring that future health protocols can be better understood and implemented by the community.

Data from hospitals, district health centers, and partner private laboratories show that 275 dengue cases have been recorded in the city from January 1 to March 23, 2025, with 135 males and 140  females.

CHSO Sanitation Inspector IV Miller Balisongen urged the public to avoid complacency when it comes to mosquito control in their barangays.

“Nagkakaroon ng false sense of security na kapag sinabi nag-spray, wala na ang dengue, ‘yun ‘yung nasa utak kasi ang tendency ay nagre-relax, hindi nila alam na mga adulticide lang ‘yun. Paano ‘yung mga kiti-kiti? In a span of days, magiging adult na naman. So pinaka-cost effective ay ang search and destroy, which is the essence of doing all of these,” Balisongen said.

Efforts being monitored include dengue-related issuances and policies, the budget allotted for dengue prevention and control, health promotion activities, environmental sanitation, and surveillance.

The data also tracks the purchase of sprayers, insecticides, treated screens, drum covers, and information, education, and communication (IEC) materials.

The enforcement of the Anti-Dengue Ordinance of Baguio City remains a key component  of the city’s strategy. This ordinance aims to prevent and control dengue fever by implementing measures to reduce cases and requiring residents to take an active role in fighting the disease. Penalties for non-compliance are also outlined in the ordinance.

Barangay officials have reported ongoing challenges in effectively implementing the ordinance. One of the primary issues is the  inconsistent cooperation by some residents, which complicates the enforcement of the ordinance and hinders the effectiveness of local initiatives.

CHSO noted that despite the rise in cases, this is an opportunity to improve communication and the dissemination of health protocols across the city.

CHSO urges residents to remain vigilant, cooperate with health initiatives, and actively take part in dengue prevention measures to reduce the impact of the disease. (JDP/DEG/Chelsea Mas-PIA CAR-SLU Intern)
