CALAPAN CITY, Oriental Mindoro (PIA) — The City Government of Calapan spearheaded a free arts and crafts workshop and basic reading enhancement program through the City Public Library of Calapan which runs from August 7-10, 2023.
Seventy children participated the workshop which aims to provide knowledge, skills and reading development to children aged 7-12 years old while they are on vacation.
The program started with various programs such as Button-Pin Making, Polymer Clay Art, Heat Shrinking Art, Fabric Heat Press and Basic Reading Enhancement, provided with materials needed in the activities. In addition, the children were also taught to read using training books given by the City Public Library.
The said program was launched by the City Government in 2019 to implement the campaign under Republic Act 7743 or ‘An Act Providing for the Establishment of Congressional City and Municipality Libraries and Barangay Reading Centers throughout the Philippines.’
The program began on August 7 with a kick-off ceremony conducted in the covered court of the said barangay led by City Librarian Claire Benter, in collaboration with the Sangguniang Barangay, and many others.
Calapan City Mayor Malou Flores-Morillo expressed her gratitude to the Calapenos for the continuous suuport to the programs of her administration. Morillo said the goal of this program is to develop the children’s skills and reading development before classes formally start. (GATS/PIA MIMAROPA)
