Coast Guard warns Ilocos Norte fisherfolk of debris from Chinese rocket launch

LAOAG CITY, Ilocos Norte (PIA) – Fishers in Ilocos Norte are told to be on the lookout for possible debris from the launch of a Chinese rocket between June 28 and 30.

Lt. Joseph Christian Sagun, provincial director of Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Ilocos Norte, reported that the People’s Republic of China is scheduled to launch the Long March 7A from the Wenchang Spacecraft Launch Site in Wenchang, Hainan.

Moreover, parts of this rocket are expected to drop within the identified drop zone, which is approximately 75 nautical miles (nm) away from Burgos town and 126 nm away from Santa Ana, Cagayan.

“We caution our fisherfolk that if there is any debris sighting, please inform us right away. We advise not to retrieve or come in close to these materials,” said Sagun during the joint Provincial Peace and Order Council and Provincial Anti-Drug Abuse Council meeting on June 26.

Meanwhile, local chief executives and police chiefs of the different towns and cities are already informed of this concern.

In Pagudpud, a town next to Burgos, Mayor Rafael Ralph Benemerito II has advised fisherfolk to minimize fishing activities near the identified drop zones.

Moreover, residents and tourists are urged to limit outside exposure and stay indoors during the expected drop time to ensure their safety. (AMB/MJTAB/PIA Ilocos Norte)
