Comelec Ilocos assures clean voter list for 2025 elections

SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union — The Commission on Elections (Comelec) Region 1 assures the public that its current list of active registered voters is accurate and free of inactive voters as part of preparations for the 2025 national and local elections.

Lawyer Noli Pipo, Comelec-1 Regional Director stated that election officers across the region have updated the voting records in their respective areas ahead of next year’s elections.

“Our election officers have verified and updated the voting history of registered voters after the 2022 national and local elections and the 2023 barangay elections because the law mandates that voters who do not participate in two successive elections are classified as inactive,” Pipo explained during the Kapihan sa Bagong Pilipinas on Nov. 5.

Pipo further noted that prior concerns about deceased individuals appearing on voter lists have been addressed through collaboration between election registration boards and local civil registrars.

“Our voter list in Region 1 is updated and cleansed. We can assure you that it is clean,” Pipo remarked.

As of April 2024, data shows that 247,682 registered voters have been deactivated, with an additional 2,143 deactivations recorded in July. These individuals are excluded from the list of active voters eligible for the upcoming elections.

Meanwhile, as of October 14, the Ilocos Region has 3,654,020 active voters following a recent voter list cleansing. Pangasinan holds the largest share, with 2,170,694 voters, or 59 percent of the total. It is followed by La Union with 557,617 voters, Ilocos Sur with 488,800, and Ilocos Norte with 436,909.

The total number of registered voters for next year’s elections is only slightly higher than the 3,637,591 active voters counted for the 2023 barangay elections, which Pipo attributes to the diligent work of election officers in ensuring only active voters remain on the list.

Voter registration ended on Sept. 30. (MJTAB/CCMT, PIA La Union)
