OZAMIZ CITY, Misamis Occidental (PIA) — Honest and credible midterm elections in 2025 are possible through full support and coordination from the Philippine National Police (PNP), Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), Department of Education (DepEd), and all participating agencies working for the election period, Lawyer Roselyn Smith, Commission on Elections Ozamiz election officer, said during the kickoff gun ban checkpoint on January 12.
“Obligado atong kapulisan nga mag-put up og checkpoint. Nakita nako nga wala pa lang daan sa oras, naa na sila, established na. Dili lang sa atong Philippine National Police, pati atong Philippine Army, tanan peace officers ania karon. Karon nagkahiusa ta para sa atong ceremonial kick-off sa COMELEC,” Smith said.
(Our police are obliged to put up a checkpoint. I saw that it was not long before they were already there, already established. Not only our Philippine National Police but also our Philippine Army and all peace officers are here today. Today we are united for our ceremonial kickoff of the COMELEC.)

The checkpoints that have been established in specific areas of the city are part of the implementation rules for the election gun ban. “Kay diri pa lang daan, ato na dayon ma-decipher kung naa ba violations sa gun ban. Ang atong COMELEC, nag-accept na karon og application to carry firearms kay effective election period, automatic nga ilang license to carry is revoked,” she explained.
(Because from here, we can decipher if there are any violations of the gun ban. Our Comelec is now accepting an application to carry firearms during the effective election period; automatically, their license to carry is revoked.)
All private citizens and government officials are subject to the election gun ban, which also extends to anyone who wants to carry a firearm during this time.

“This is simply for the election. We have a signboard to slow down 20 meters before the checkpoint so that our transport vehicles can also be alarmed, and on the back you can see the respective cell phone numbers for the appropriate report,” she added.
COMELEC aims for a peaceful and orderly election on May 12, 2025. (JMOR/PIA-10/Misamis Occidental)
