STO. TOMAS CITY, Batangas ─ Senator Francis N. Tolentino spearheaded the flag-raising and wreath-laying rites in commemoration of Malvar’s 159th birth anniversary at the Museo ni Miguel Malvar on 27 September 2024, 8:00 a.m.
Senator Tolentino was joined by National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) Executive Director Carminda R. Arevalo, Batangas 3rd District Representative Ma. Theresa V. Collantes, Anakalusugan Partylist Representative Ray Florence T. Reyes, Batangas Governor Hermilando I. Mandanas, Vice Governor Atty. Arth Jhun Aguilar Marasigan, Sto. Tomas Mayor Catherine Jaurigeu-Perez, members from the Okada Foundation, and descendants of Miguel Malvar.
A short program featured a keynote speech by Senator Tolentino, followed by a ceremonial turnover of the Malvar collections. Okada Foundation President James G. Lorenzana donated these collections to the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP).
Gen. Miguel Malvar was born on 27 September 1865 in San Miguel, Santo Tomas, Batangas. He is known to be the last Filipino general to surrender to the Americans. Due to his bravery and patriotism, he was accorded an honourable treatment after his surrender; he was not imprisoned nor exiled, but was permitted to go home and live in peace with his family.
The NHCP is the national government agency mandated to promote Philippine history through its museums, research, and publications, and to preserve historical heritage through conservation and the marking of historic sites and structures. (NHCP)
