‘Sovereignty resides in the People and all government authority emanates from them.’ These words were the title of Proclamation No. 1 signed by then President Corazon C. Aquino on 25 February 1986, thirty-nine years ago–the same day she took her oath of office before Supreme Court Associate Justice Claudio Teehankee. At that moment, the world looked upon the Philippines following the successful people power revolution that ushered in the transfer of power into a newly elected government of, for, and by the people.
The mostly bloodless transition was credited to the millions of Filipinos from all walks of life that gathered along the Epifanio de los Santos Avenue and at other major cities of the country to offer their lives in their sincere belief that enough was enough, and a new freedom had dawned in our archipelago. Through their stand, in the face of the ever-present threat of violence and death, hope had shined through, and it was the people that ended the regime of Ferdinand Marcos, Sr.
The NHCP is the national government agency mandated to promote Philippine history through its museums, research, and publications, and to preserve historical heritage through conservation and the marking of historic sites and structures.
