Cordillera Weaving Industry Summit set on July 17-18 at SM Baguio

BAGUIO CITY (PIA) — The Cordillera Weaving Industry Council (CWIC) will conduct the 2024 Cordillera Weaving Industry Summit (CWIS) on July 17-18 at the SM City Baguio in continuing efforts to showcase and promote the diverse woven products and innovations of the region.

Department of Science and Technology (DOST)-Cordillera Assistant Regional Director Pita Picpican said the summit also aims to provide updates on the market trends, new technologies, and advancements within the weaving industry; impart traditional knowledge to the younger generations towards the preservation of cultural heritage, and foster new collaborations, partnerships, and business opportunities to drive growth of the weaving industry in the region.

The two-day event features Cordillera Weaving Industry Exhibit, Cordillera Weavers Fashion Show, Weavers’ forum and weavers’ night, and a lecture demonstration on the proper use of Cordillera woven textile. The official CWIC logo will also be launched.

The exhibit will be participated by 13 exhibitors from Abra, Apayao, Benguet, Ifugao, Kalinga, and Mountain Province, and DOST- Philippine Textile Research Institute (PTRI).

Picpican said the Weaver’s Forum will tackle issues on counterfeiting, weaving innovations, pricing and fair trade, Digitalization, textiles of indigenous people in Cordillera.

The Cordillera Weavers Fashion Show is set on July 17 from 3:00 PM – 5:00 PM at SM City while the Regional Weaver’s Night will be held at the Paragon Hotel and Suites.

A lecture-demonstration on the proper use of Cordillera woven textiles dubbed “Mastering the Cordillera Woven Textiles: Understanding Designs and its Applications, ” will be conducted on July 18, 3:00 PM – 5:00 PM at SM City.

This aims to impart to the youth and stakeholders the traditional knowledge on the cultural meaning of the colors, patterns, and shapes embedded in the woven fabrics. It also aims to demonstrate the proper wearing or use of woven textiles/clothing, she added.

The summit is an annual activity of the CWIC but this year’s event will be synchronized with the 3rd Philippine Handloom Weaving Conference, an initiative of the DOST-PTRI.

The CWIC is composed of 21 government agencies, two non-government organizations, 10 higher education institutions, and 12 weavers’ associations.(MAWC-PIA CAR)
