BAGUIO CITY (PIA) — Cordilleran para archer Agustina Bantiloc kicked off the medal hunt for the Philippines in the Paris Paralympics 2024.
Bantiloc, a native of Tanudan, Kalinga and a resident of Baguio City, is the first to see action among the six-strong delegation representing the country in the Paris Paralympics 2024.
Bantiloc participated in the para-archery women’s individual compound open ranking round during the opening day at Les Invalides’ archery range. She shot a season-best 618 and placed 28th at the conclusion of the open event and will move to the Round of 16.
The oldest member of Team Philippines at 56, Bantiloc was the first national para archer who qualified in the Games for physically-challenged athletes.
Bantiloc and veteran para swimmer Ernie Gawilan were the flag-bearers of the Philippine delegation during the Parade of Nations at the Paris Paralympics 2024 opening ceremony on August 28.
They were joined by fellow Cordilleran wheelchair racer Jerrold Pete Mangliwan, javelin thrower Cendy Asusano, swimmer Angel Mae Otom, and taekwondo jin Allain Ganapin.
Mangliwan, who hails from Tabuk City, also started his bid for the gold in the Men’s 400M – T52 heats on Friday, August 30.
In a statement, the Philippine Sports Commission called for the support of the whole nation for the country’s para athletes who have shown dedication to their qualifications and training before entering the biggest sporting event this year.
“Let us show our heartwarming support to each and every Filipino para athlete who will be competing in every category and sport. Let us continue to hope for our Bidang Bayaning Manlalaro,” the PSC said in a statement.
On Thursday, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. wished the six Filipino para-athletes “best of luck” as they participate in the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games.
“Compete with the heart of Filipino warriors, and show the world the strength of our people. We are all immensely proud of you. Best of luck, and Mabuhay ang Team Pilipinas,” Marcos said in a social media page.
“To Allain Keanu Ganapin, Angel Mae Otom, Agustina Maximo Bantiloc, Cendy Asusano, Ernie Gawilan and Jerold Pete Mangliwan, as you represent the Philippines in the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games, know that you are all already champions in our eyes. Your commitment to your training as elite athletes, despite challenges you face, exemplifies the spirit of the Filipino people,” the President said.
“No accolade, praise, or reward can truly return the pride you bring to our country. As you take on the world stage at Paralympics, remember that the whole nation is with you, supporting you every step of the way,” Marcos added. (RMC, PIA CAR) (PSC, Philippine Paralympic Committee photos)
