DA-8’s AMIA program boosts farming techniques in Eastern Visayas

TACLOBAN CITY — To introduce farmers to various techniques and procedures on planting crops, the Adaptation and Mitigation Initiative in Agriculture (AMIA) program of the Department of Agriculture – Regional Field Office 8, held series of briefing/orientation on nursery management and seed regeneration to the AMIA villages in Region VIII.

The sessions, facilitated by DA-AMIA personnel, took place in several barangays across Eastern Visayas, including Brgy. Uban, in Babatngon, Leyte; Brgy. Pangi in Libagon, Southern Leyte; Brgy. Matin-ao in Burauen, Leyte; Brgy. Union in Caibiran, Biliran; Brgy. Gumamela in Sta. Rita, Samar; Brgy. Parasanon in Pinabacdao, Samar; Brgy. GM Osias in Gamay, Northern Samar; and Brgy. Pingan in General Macarthur, Eastern Samar. There was also participation of municipal agriculturists and agricultural technicians from various Municipal Agriculture Offices.

Key resource speakers during the sessions included Alicia Bulawan from Abuyog Experiment Station and John Rodulf Desdechado, Agriculturist II, from the DA-RFO 8 – High Value Crops Development Program (HVCDP).

The objective is to capacitate farmers with various methods and procedures for cultivating crops, covering activities from land preparation to the harvesting stage. This aims to heighten awareness among farmer beneficiaries regarding the impacts of both proper and improper nursery management practices. Furthermore, the goal is to provide farmers with essential techniques, including seed regeneration, to promote sustainable production practices.

Estrella Raga, member of the AMIA Matin-ao Farmers Association, expressed gratitude for the training.

“Dako kaduro an bulig hini nga training ha amon kay nahibabaro kami han sakto ngan tama nga proseso han pagtanom, an tama nga pag-alaga ngan pagpaturok han tanom,” Raga said.
