CITY OF ILAGAN, Isabela (PIA) —The Department of Agriculture (DA) Region 2, in partnership with the local government of Sta. Maria, Isabela, has launched a program aimed at improving the local cattle herd through the use of superior genetic artificial insemination (AI).
Norlito Timberza, a livestock artificial inseminator of the DA-2 Livestock Division, explained that the initiative’s primary goal is to enhance the genetics of local cattle herds by introducing high-quality semen to increase the profitability and sustainability of cattle farming in the region.
Timberza outlined that the process involves artificial insemination through estrus synchronization, a method that ensures more animals are bred at the beginning of the breeding season, optimizing the chances for successful breeding.
He said eight cattle breeders have undergone artificial insemination, with another eight set to follow in the coming week.
In addition to the AI procedure, the program also includes health interventions, such as deworming and vitamin supplementation, aimed at improving the overall well-being of the cattle.
“Artificial insemination offers farmers access to top-tier genetics, while the health interventions ensure that the animals are in optimal condition to thrive. This integrated approach will result in healthier, more productive herds, ultimately improving the livelihoods of local farmers,” Timberza said.
He emphasized that this program represents a major advancement for local cattle farmers.
“By combining genetic improvement with essential health measures, the initiative provides a comprehensive strategy for livestock enhancement,” he added.
Sam Pagauitan, a farm worker from Sta. Maria, expressed his enthusiasm for the program, noting its potential to transform farming operations. He anticipates that the improved cattle genetics and overall animal health will significantly boost productivity and profitability in the area. (OTB/MGE/PIA Isabela)
