DA grants Php500k worth of farming assistance to coop, schools in Palawan

CITY OF CALAPAN, Oriental Mindoro (PIA) — A total of Php500,000.00 farming assistance was given by the Department of Agriculture-MIMAROPA to the Palawan Tarabidan Multi-purpose Cooperative under the High Value Crops Development Program (HVCDP)

From the total amount, Php200,000.00 was spent to provide assorted garden tools and bed-type planting box to the cooperative as part of their initial farming tools to be used in the launching of their urban garden. Meanwhile, additional tools and training amounting to Php300,000.00 were also given to Palawan Tarabidan MPC to level-up their skills and know-how about urban farming.

Aside from the cooperative, schools under the Department of Education (DepEd) SDO Palawan received garden tools as part of the opening of ‘Gulayan sa Paaralan’. These schools are Aribungos Elementary School from Brooke’s Point; Burirao Proper Elementary School from Narra, and Labog Elementary School of Sofronio Española. Meanwhile, Tagbarungis Elementary School and Iratag Elementary School, both of which are under DepEd SDO Puerto Princesa received assorted garden tools and agricultural supplies amounting to Php 12,000.00.

These tools are integral in the promotion of backyard and urban farming in areas where vegetables are not widely accessible. The DA is promoting urban farming to enhance food security as well as generate income to informal workers. (JJGS/PIA Mimaropa/OrMin)
