CITY OF ILAGAN, Isabela (PIA) – The Department of Agriculture – Bureau of Agricultural Research (DA-BAR) has collaborated with Isabela State University (ISU) System to conduct extensive research and ramp up the production of turmeric – a yellow ginger known for its potential health benefits.
Based on studies, turmeric is rich in phytonutrients that may protect the body by neutralizing free radicals and shielding the cells from damage. It also helps prevent medical conditions such as cancer and heart disease.
ISU President Dr. Ricmar Aquino and DA-BAR Director Dr. Junel Soriano announced that the collaboration includes a partnership with Buertek Corporation, a private firm focused on developing technologies to improve turmeric varieties and boost production.
Buertek Corporation, led by General Manager Dr. Richard Nixon Gomez, has agreed to supply raw turmeric materials for research and production purposes.
Also, the firm has agreed to make its facilities available for the production, marketing, and joint research efforts to modernize turmeric cultivation.
“We are also open to involving local farmers and students supported by the Agricultural Competitiveness Enhancement Fund in the turmeric venture,” said Gomez.
The three parties have agreed to develop a sustainability plan to protect the interests of the university and the private sector, ensuring that research remains a central focus of the university’s mission.
“Let’s give it our best effort and work together. The pandemic is behind us, and now is the time to create a lasting legacy. This is a great opportunity to tap into the global market, and it’s happening right here at ISU,” Dr. Gomez added. (OTB/MGE/PIA Isabela)
