QUEZON CITY, (PIA) — The Department of Agriculture (DA) kicked off the National Livestock and Poultry Month on Monday, emphasizing its commitment to bolster food security and sustainability in the sector.
Under the theme “Masaganang Paghahayupan Tungo sa Bagong Pilipinas” (Abundant Livestock Farming Towards a New Philippines), the initiative aligns with the administration’s goal of enhancing the agricultural sector’s global competitiveness.
Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel, Jr., in remarks delivered by Undersecretary Deogracias Savellano, addressed challenges facing the industry, including transboundary animal diseases, climate change, and market price fluctuations.
Tiu Laurel outlined key measures to combat urgent issues such as African Swine Fever (ASF) and Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI).
These include introducing ASF vaccines, implementing temporary import bans from affected countries, and strengthening regulations through the DA Inspectorate and Enforcement.
“To combat these challenges, the DA has introduced ASF vaccines, enacted temporary bans on imports from affected countries, and is enhancing regulations,” Tiu Laurel said.
The agriculture chief called for unity within the sector to adopt new technologies and best practices in animal science.
He emphasized the importance of collective effort in achieving the administration’s agricultural goals.
The 2024 National Livestock and Poultry Month, running from October 7 to 11, will feature various programs and seminars focused on the Philippine livestock and poultry industry.
