DA Mimaropa awards swine to farmers in OccMin

SAN JOSE, Occidental Mindoro (PIA) — The Department of Agriculture (DA) Mimaropa, in partnership with Occidental Mindoro State College (OMSC), recently awarded 10 piglets to Barayong Integrated Rural Farmers Irrigators Association (BIRFIA), Inc. in the municipality of Calintaan.

The project aims to provide an additional livelihood for the beneficiaries through swine raising.

The awarded large white landrace piglets are under DA Livestock Program’s Livelihood Project through Swine Production, a collaborative project with OMSC worth P3M.

OMSC Project Coordinator Elaine M. Paz said the project fund was downloaded to the institution which covers 16 heads of swine (15 gilts and one boar), biologics, feeds, equipment, and facility such as nursery pen for the swine dispersal. In turn, the school will be in charge of the rearing of the livestock. When the swine gives birth, 70% of the piglets will be awarded to selected beneficiaries in San Jose, Magsaysay, Rizal, and Calintaan (SAMARICA) areas.

According to Roxanne Yadao of DA Mimaropa, BIRFIA will employ a roll-over scheme, where the awarded piglets will be raised by selected members of the association. When the animal gives birth, a portion of the piglets will be dispersed to eligible members of the association.

The awarded piglets are insured under Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation (PCIC) to protect the beneficiaries from economic losses if unforeseen problems would arise such as swine diseases. (DSG/PIA Mimaropa-OccMin)
