SAN JOSE, Occidental Mindoro (PIA) – The Department of Agriculture (DA) MIMAROPA teams up with Occidental Mindoro State College (OMSC) to put up an onion processing facility in the province to maximize its production.
Christian Andrew P. Carranza of DA – Agribusiness and Marketing Assistance Division (AMAD) MIMAROPA explained at the DA Information Caravan 2024: Masaganang Agrikultura Tungo sa Bagong Pilipinas recently held in San Jose that the P5 million project will help farmers utilize their onions and prevent spoilage.
“Isa iyon sa mga number one solusyon na tinitingnan namin na bago tumungo sa deterioration [ang sibuyas], maiprocess. Value-adding din siya, so malaki ang potentiyal nito on the perspective ng market,” Carranza said.
(This is one of the main solutions we are looking into; processing onions before they deteriorate. This is also a value-adding activity and has a huge potential from a marketing perspective.)
To ensure the project’s success, thorough research on the market and product improvement will be conducted by the DA AMAD and the OMSC, respectively after the project construction.
“Isa sa mga strategy rito ‘yung masusuing pag-aaral together with OMSC sa pag-i-establish ng market ng processed onions. Once na ma-open ito, makikita natin yung capability ng facility, saka…maima-match ito doon sa akmang market kung saan ‘yung quality ng processed onion na sasakto doon sa needs,” Carranza said.
(One of the strategies employed is intensive research with OMSC in establishing the market for processed onions. Once the project opens, we will be able to see the facility’s capability and match it with the suitable market that matches the quality of the produced processed onion.)
Carranza confirmed that the project’s construction is set to start by November and will take at least two to three months of work to complete. (DSG/PIA MIMAROPA – Occidental Mindoro)
