DA Secretary Tiu-Laurel delivers P1.3B in aid to Isabela farmers

City of Ilagan, Isabela – Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel recently visited Isabela province, where he distributed over P1.3 billion in agricultural assistance to local farmers.

The funds, allocated from various DA programs including rice, corn, high-value crops, livestock, and others, will support initiatives aimed at boosting productivity and promoting sustainable farming practices across municipalities.

“These funds will not only address your immediate agricultural needs but also invest in your future,” Laurel stated. “As we work together to build a stronger agricultural sector under the Bagong Pilipinas, let’s remember that while challenges may arise, your dedication and support for the department are crucial.”

The assistance package included farm machinery, equipment, farm inputs, fuel subsidies, and piglets with feed for hog raisers impacted by African Swine Fever. Laurel emphasized the importance of ensuring food security and strengthening the agricultural sector in provinces like Isabela, which plays a vital role in the country’s rice and corn production.

Laurel also led the inauguration of a P184.4 million rice processing system building and equipment funded through cost-sharing between the Department of Agriculture, the Philippine Center for Postharvest Research and Mechanization (PhilMech), and local farmer cooperatives and associations located in Naguilian, Isabela.

The DA contributed P49.5 million, and the Providers Multi-Purpose Cooperative shared P69.94 million for the completion of the rice processing system building and equipment.

The DA’s contribution includes the construction of two building units; for PHILMECH, one rice mill (2-3 tons per hour), one recirculating dryer (6 tons capacity), and two dryers (12 tons capacity). Meanwhile, Providers MPC provided services for site development, operational capital, trucks, office space, silos, truck weighing scales, and other rice mill accessories.

The projects, he added, aim to significantly enhance agricultural productivity and efficiency through the provision of advanced machinery and postharvest facilities, which will support farmers in their livelihoods and eventually increase their income.

Meanwhile, 1st District Congressman and House Deputy Speaker Antonio “Tonypet” Albano assured continued budget support from Congress for farmers, underscoring the critical role of agriculture in economic recovery and prosperity.

He urged stakeholders to view agriculture as a valuable business opportunity to help the country’s economy grow and prosper. (MGE/PIA Isabela)
