TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan (PIA) – To protect the distinct qualities of Itbayat garlic, the Department of Agriculture (DA) is set to register the white garlic variety cultivated in the island town of Itbayat, Batanes, under the National Seed Industry Council (NSIC).
During her visit to the province, Agriculture Undersecretary Cheryl Marie Natividad-Caballero said the move will also help establish quality control mechanisms that will enhance the garlic’s marketability and ensure its authenticity.
The Batanes garlic is known for its strong organic flavor and is a key part of the local cuisine. It’s also grown traditionally, with farmers often planting it after rice cultivation, which is said to improve its quality.
“We see great potential in Itbayat garlic. Registering it with the NSIC is a step toward preserving its identity and expanding its market reach,” she said.
Caballero also expressed support for the province’s Garlic Development Plan, particularly the use of Itbayat’s red garlic as a source of planting materials to increase local production.
She emphasized the need for value-adding and processing initiatives to help farmers earn more from their produce.
“Processing the small-sized local garlic into other products can significantly boost farmers’ income,” she noted.
To support storage and preservation, Caballero announced the construction of a cold storage facility in Itbayat, which will be used for garlic and other crops grown by local Ivatan farmers.
She also encouraged farmers to form associations to gain better access to government programs and funding opportunities.
“Cooperation and unity among associations are key to achieving progress faster,” she said.
The DA’s visit to Itbayat was in response to an appeal by Batanes Governor Marilou Cayco, who called for stronger support to develop the province’s garlic industry and help link local farmers to broader markets.
“We recognize the significance of garlic production in Itbayat as a time-honored livelihood and one of our vital economic drivers,” Cayco said.
Located at the northernmost tip of the Philippines, Itbayat is the last inhabited island before the maritime boundary with Taiwan and relies heavily on agriculture and fishing. (OTB/PIA Region 2)
