DAVAO CITY—The ongoing construction of the Bucana Bridge (Davao River) is targeted to be completed in the third quarter of this year (2025).
The overall completion rate of the 1.34-kilometer bridge currently stands at 73%.
“Although recent rains in Mindanao have posed some challenges, we are confident that the Bucana Bridge will be finished ahead of schedule. Our project engineers and the contractor are committed to expediting the work,” said Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Senior Undersecretary Emil K. Sadain.
Senior Usec. Sadain together with other DPWH officials which included Project Director Rodrigo I. Delos Reyes of the Bridges Management Cluster Unified Project Management Office (BMC-UPMO) UPMO Roads Management Cluster 1 Project Director Benjamin A. Bautista, Stakeholders Relations Service Director Randy R. Del Rosario, and UPMO Project Manager Joweto V. Tulaylay, conducted a site inspection at the bridge project in Bucana, near the mouth of the Davao River on January 27.
The DPWH officials observed substantial progress on the project with current activities now centered on the bridge’s superstructure.
The Bucana Bridge has a total contract cost of P3.126 billion and is a four-lane, six-span extradosed bridge with advanced structural features. It was built to complement the Davao City Coastal Road by connecting its segments separated by the Davao River.
The Bago Aplaya-Tulip Drive segment of the coastal road opened on July 1, 2023. The subsequent completion of the bridge in the third quarter of this year will provide access to the sections of the bridge which will run up to R. Castillo.
The infrastructure will accommodate up to 35,000 vehicles daily, improving traffic flow and reducing congestion in Davao City’s coastal areas.
The bridge project is funded under a China Aid Grant complemented by funding from the Philippine government. (PIA/RGA with reports and photo from DPWH)
