Davao City’s People’s Park set for renovation, more parks to be opened

DAVAO CITY—The 4-hectare People’s Park in downtown Davao City is set for a P100 million renovation.

Juancho Dagasohan, head of the Parks and Playgrounds Division of the City Environment and Natural Resources Office, said the renovation will require the park’s closure.

He said the renovation design is in the planning stages and construction will be done in phases.

The park, formerly the PTA Sports Complex, where athletic meets were once held, was developed into a nature and culture-themed park with mini-forests, mini-gardens, a playground, statues, fishponds, fountains and a jogging oval. The P72 million park opened in 2007.

The name People’s Park came from a city government contest won by retired seaman Romeo Sardon.

On Dec. 1, 2024, the National Museum of the Philippines-Davao opened in a portion of the park.

Also within the park’s periphery is the Davao Cinematheque, a 60-seat cinema operated by the Film Development Council of the Philippines, which screens critically acclaimed Filipino and international films.

Davao City is also opening and planning to build new parks. The city currently has 28 public parks.

More Parks

“We have 28 parks in Davao City. This coming first quarter, we will launch another park, the Roxas Greenway Park, which will open before Araw ng Dabaw,” Dagasohan said.

Roxas Greenway Park is a linear park that buffers Roxas Avenue and its open canal. Amenities include a physical fitness area, paved and well-lighted sidewalks, canal bridges, a promenade and landscaped areas.

Dagasohan said the local government is sustaining the process of establishing more parks.

“The Davao City government has not stopped creating more parks. We are still coordinating with the City Planning and Development Office and the Task Force on the Inventory of Real Properties of the City Government of Davao to open more open spaces for parks, as parks are essential for a developing city,” Dagasohan said.
