Davao Occidental LGU cites need for nutrition in emergency plan

DAVAO CITY (PIA) — The Provincial Nutrition Action Office of Davao Occidental underscored the need of an institutionalized and comprehensive Nutrition in Emergency (NiE) Plan due to the province’s high risk of several disasters, particularly in terms of geographic location.

With this stance of Provincial Nutrition Action Officer Dr. Gene Rose Carmona, the personnel of the Local Nutrition Clusters and the Nutritionist-Dietitian Deployment Program (NDDP) in the province were mobilized to be equipped with sufficient knowledge needed as a basis in formulating the NiE Plan.

The provincial government of Davao Occidental recently capacitated their Local Nutrition Clusters in a first tranche of training on NiE, which covered an overview of the disaster risk reduction management, the cluster approach, and the phases of NiE.

The National Nutrition Council of Davao Region stated that the NiE plan encapsulates the essential nutrition activities in response to nutrition emergencies, aimed at preventing death and worsening of malnutrition, especially the most nutritionally vulnerable groups, through preparedness, response, and recovery phases.

The proper training is deemed crucial to providing a comprehensive NiE Plan integrated in the Disaster Risk Reduction Management in Health (DRRM-H) Plan of the local government units. (CLC/PIA Davao/NNC Davao Region)
