Davao pushes for digital careers

DAVAO CITY—In a bid to meet its target of having 150,000 people working in the Information Communications Technology (ICT) sector in Davao Region, the Department of Information Communication Technology (DICT) and the Association of IT-BPM Industry Network of Davao (AI-BIND) will be holding a Digital Careers and IT-BPM Expo this October 25 at the Mapua Colleges of Mindanao in Davao City.

The event which is expected to be attended by 500 participants aims to expose them to opportunities in the Information Technology-Business Process Management (IT-BPM) sector in the region.

“There will be talks sa mga resource persons natin, particularly from the IT-BPM industry, also we have representatives from the local government unit, they will be providing us information on the economic effect of the IT-BPM industry in our local economy and then DICT will be providing the data on what areas the Philippines is positioning,” Engr. Albert Gabriel, IT officer of DICT-XI said.

Aside from advocating to the audience made up of students and young professionals on their possible career future in the industry, they also want Davao Region to be one of the main hubs of the IT-BPM in the Philippines.

“By 2028 we are eyeing 150,000 jobs in the IT-BPM industry and the other digital careers industry,” he said.

Currently, the region has 80,000 people employed in the sector. “Right now, DICT is putting the mechanisms, all the advocacy programs and partnerships with the stakeholders para maabot natin ang (so we could reach) 150,000,” Gabriel said.

 He said during the expo they will also be showcasing the case studies and best practices of the IT-BPM industry.
