DAVAO CITY — The Davao Region is facing a serious challenge with illegal drug use affecting 200 barangays, including 76 in Davao City. To combat this, the education sector is stepping up as a crucial partner in drug prevention.
Romel F. Momo, vice president for operations of the Holy Cross of Davao College said in his paper presented to the Regional Development Council of Davao Region that the schools are implementing comprehensive drug education programs, including curriculum integration and capacity building for educators and counselors.
Momo, who is also Private Sector Representative for the Academe pointed out particular programs, like the Department of Education’s Preventive Drug Education Program Policy that ensures that drug abuse prevention is integrated into the curriculum at all levels. In Davao City, the City Anti-Drug Abuse Council has developed specific drug education modules for Grades 4-12 and Alternative Learning System learners.
CHED Davao Region and the Davao Association of Guidance Counselors are training guidance counselors to address drug-related issues and provide interventions. Educators are also being trained to integrate drug education into their teaching and create a school-wide culture of awareness.
His report also stressed that community engagement and student leadership are also key components of the region’s drug prevention strategy. Student leaders are being trained to spearhead anti-drug campaigns in their communities. Schools are partnering with local government units, non-governmental organizations, and faith-based groups to strengthen support systems for students.
The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency Davao is advocating for random drug testing in secondary schools. This initiative aims to identify students who may be using drugs and provide them with necessary interventions.
Through these comprehensive efforts, the Davao Region’s education sector is taking a proactive stance against drug use, aiming to create a safer and healthier environment for all students by fostering a culture of awareness, resilience, and support, empowering students and communities to actively participate in building a drug-free future.
